We’re a few weeks into an exciting new class at Creating Space Yoga Studio – the Better Bones class on Saturday mornings at 10:45am. This class is a bit of a departure from our other classes: we start out with a 10 minute marching, line-dancing-style warm-up with some fun, South African music, and then move on to some modified yoga-type exercises that are designed to maintain bone density and improve posture. We use the wall, chairs, and small weights to gently stretch and strengthen our backs, shoulders, wrists, and ankles. Then we wind down a little on our mats and do a long relaxation to end the class.
This class is more of an active, exercise class and would be a great second class for our students, complementing the regular yoga classes. Since most people start losing bone density after the age of 30, we should all be concerned about keeping our bones strong so that we can avoid becoming one of the many Canadians who get osteoporosis in their lifetime.
Watch for more information coming soon on how yoga exercises can help build bone mass.
